Supported Self-Help Services

A range of supported self-help services will be established as part of Cape York Welfare Reform to assist community members to meet their parental responsibilities as well as normal behavioural expectations.

The Family Responsibilities Commission (FRC) will refer individuals to current and new support services in the four Welfare Reform communities, as appropriate. Support services can assist individuals to meet their obligations by helping them address the underlying behavioural issues that have brought them to the attention of the FRC.

All service providers working in, or with, the four communities will need to reconsider service delivery to ensure it is consistent with the principles of Cape York Welfare Reform and to enable a clear focus on supported self-help and individual responsibility.

Parenting programs will seek to strengthen families and address harmful parenting behaviours. Wellbeing centres will be established in each of the four communities to deliver clinical assessment, counselling, case co-ordination, and referral services to respond to drug and alcohol, mental health, family violence and gambling issues.
